Revathy, Singapore
Revathy attends her local Salvation Army corps (church) in Singapore along with her husband. In December of 2022, they were both enrolled as soldiers (church members).
‘Growing up, my mother and I “house-hopped”, often being chased away from one place to another. I started hating my mother, blaming her for everything I went through. I didn't know at that time that she had schizophrenia.
‘At 16, a relative invited me to a Good Friday drama at church and it changed the course of my life. As I grew in Christ, the Lord softened my heart towards my mother and my hatred transformed into love and compassion. Once, I found her on the streets in China Town… I held my tears in and helped her get dressed and headed to church. I could not listen to a word from the pastor. My heart was aching for my mother's condition. I wept bitterly, telling God that I could no longer watch her live this way: “Jesus, I give you three days to help find my mother shelter.”
‘The following day, I spoke to my school counsellor who wrote a letter to our Member of Parliament (MP). In the process, many tried to turn us away. I was a timid girl, afraid to stand up for myself, but not this time! God gave me the strength to push back and the MP made arrangements for my mother.
‘She was referred to a shelter, run by the Singapore Association of Mental Health. She could stay there and receive psychiatric care. I was able to visit her any time. I was bursting with joy and tears. Within three days, Jesus proved that he was faithful. That was the start of a new beginning in my life in Christ.’
