Women Who Hope: Victoria
Major Victoria has served as The Salvation Army’s Senior Representative to the United Nations for the past 18 years. She serves on NGO Executive Committees and is Vice-Chair of the Working Group on Girls. With this appointment, she has had the opportunity to advocate for human dignity and social justice with the world’s poor and oppressed. She frequently meets with women from around the world to gain a better understanding of justice issues that people deal with on a daily basis.
My work at the United Nations has given me the opportunity to listen to others’ stories and to learn from them firsthand how they have responded when issues arise for them and their communities.
Over many years, I have had the opportunity to participate in the fight for justice alongside women who come to the annual Commission on the Status of Women. Together, we work for women to have a voice that allows them to speak for themselves. Through these gatherings, I have received a whole new perspective on gendered issues.
In response, I find hope in working with The Salvation Army’s International Social Justice Women’s Group. They consider the issues that women face globally and are doing something about it in on a local level in their communities. This group, as well as the Girls’ Group, are true advocates – something we don’t hear much about in The Salvation Army – by raising their voices and helping vulnerable groups to raise their voices, too.
In March 2025, as we meet for the 69th Commission on the Status of Women, The Salvation Army will be represented by a delegation of more than twenty passionate and determined individuals, and we hope to make an impact through our panel events, exploring matters of global significance to women and families, and how The Salvation Army is currently and can continue make a difference for future generations.
Above all, my hope is built on Jesus Christ and I thank God for the opportunity to share that with others.
