The Salvation Army supports the Summit of the Future

Salvation Army response to Summit of the Future 2024

The Salvation Army welcomes the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Pact for the Future on 22 September 2024. This document is the culmination of years of work and months of negotiations, and represents a reaffirmation of the role of the UN.

The Salvation Army is pleased to see that the role of faith communities is affirmed in the Pact for the Future. In addition, the pact asserts the importance of combating discrimination on the basis of religion.

The Pact for the Future is but the first step to transform the UN into a body that is more efficient and effective in promoting justice for all. Twenty-first-century challenges require 21st-century solutions, which includes the creation of intergenerational forums with a multilateral focus.

International Social Justice Commission Directors, Colonels Ian and Wendy Swan, represent The Salvation Army’s international leader, General Lyndon Buckingham, at the UN and were present at the UN General Assembly when the Pact for the Future was ratified.

‘Christians, including The Salvation Army, need to lend their voice for advocacy on behalf of those most adversely affected,’ General Buckingham notes. ‘Such advocacy is grounded in The Salvation Army’s work with the poor and marginalised.’
