Volunteers Say 'Thank You' with 2000 Donuts
Friday, June 5, was National Donut Day. The Salvation Army’s Action Group of Young Professionals (TAG) and over 40 volunteers gave away 2,000 Krispy Kreme donuts to organizations throughout Kent County as a token of thanks and appreciation for the good they are doing in our community. Businesses and organizations were nominated by the community for making a difference in the Grand Rapids area. Organizations that were visited included Donut Day include Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, United Way, Grand Rapids Police Department, Grand Rapids Public Schools Administration, Guiding Light Mission and the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
We would like to thank Krispy Kreme for donating 2,000 donuts, Grand Valley State University for hosting volunteers, Donut Day volunteers who went all over Kent County spreading cheer with donuts and The Salvation Army Action Group for their hard work in putting this event together! The history of Donut Day goes back to World War I when “doughnut lassies” fed doughnuts to American soldiers on the front lines in France. The “doughnut lassies” also provided spiritual aid and comfort. National Doughnut Day was first celebrated in Chicago in 1938 to commemorate the work of the “doughnut lassies” who served soldiers during World War I. This year marked the 5th year of The Salvation Army’s Action Group’s 2,000 donut giveaway event. To learn more about TAG and view Donut Day photos, visit facebook.com/SAActionGroup.
