Music is something that, no matter the native tongue, speaks to and is understood by its listeners.  On April 13, The Salvation Army’s Norwegian Territorial Brass Band took the stage in the Performing Arts Center at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center.   The concert, which lasted nearly two hours, contained eight different and unique pieces of music. Three of the musical pieces were written by band members while the remaining five were written by other Norwegian composers.

Over 175 people attended the event which offered free music, community and fellowship. A free will offering was held to fund The Salvation Army’s Instrument Donation Drive that promotes children partaking in music.  Throughout this offering, a piano solo was played by bandmaster William Himes, Territorial Music and Gospel Arts Secretary. During the intermission, Pablo Garcia witnessed to the positive effects music and how it has influenced his life for the better.

The goal of the Instrument Donation Drive is to put musical instruments into the hands of children in Western Michigan and Northern Indiana who would not normally have the opportunity to experience the joy of making music. The drive is ongoing and donations are being accepted until the end of the month at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, located at 2500 Division Avenue South in Grand Rapids.
