23 June 2015

On Monday, June 22, a tornado struck Portland, Michigan at 2:30pm. The tornado traveled four miles with a maximum width of 50-100 yards. Peak winds were estimated to reach 100mph. The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) was on the scene shortly after providing hydration and food for the first responders and clean-up crew of the disaster. The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) was also on the scene providing radio communication during the disaster to help coordinate efforts.

Between 5:00pm and 8:00pm, The Salvation Army EDS volunteers served over 500 drinks, 60 sandwiches and 100 snacks. In total, over 100 people received food and hydration to keep their body and spirits nourished.  The Salvation Army also partnered with the Red Cross by providing food and hydration to serve people in their shelter, as well as their volunteers.

Fortunately, damage from the tornado was relatively minimal, and clean-up efforts have moved quickly. EDS volunteers are standing by if there is a need for further assistance in the Portland area, and they are ready to respond to any other severe weather that may strike this summer.
