Celebrating Our Veterans Event an Overwhelming Success
On Thursday evening, May 14, The Salvation Army of Kent County honored local veterans for their unselfish service to country with a milestone event featuring 4-Star Army General Barry McCaffrey (ret) – one of the brightest, most decorated Army generals to serve his country.
General McCaffrey was adamant about coming to Grand Rapids and especially about the local work of The Salvation Army when he said, “The Salvation Army of Kent County is a national model of service in helping others. The number of individuals served is staggering.”
Additional appearances were made by The Salvation Army Brass Band, the Grand Rapids Honor Chorus and the Junior ROTC Color Guard who presented the colors to launch the evening’s festivities. A heartfelt introductory tribute to General McCaffrey was presented by Richard Dorsey, Divisional Planned Giving Director who personally served under McCaffrey in Vietnam.
A highlight of the evening was a video celebrating the story of Mr. Armen Oumedian, and how The Salvation Army ministered to him and his fellow soldiers deep behind German lines at the height of World War II. To view the video, click here.
