The Salvation Army of Kent County Responds to West Michigan Tornadoes
Grand Rapids, MI August 24, 2016 – On Saturday, August 20 at approximately 4:00 p.m., The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Canteen was called-out to support the Emergency Management Command Post in Wyoming, Michigan. The Command Post consisted of City of Wyoming and Kent County Emergency Management personnel which were responding to damage caused by a massive storm that included an EF-0 tornado that touched down in Grandville and Wyoming earlier in the afternoon.
To date, over 1,200 drinks, 900 snacks and 600 prepared meals were distributed to residents, first responders and others associated with relief efforts. Current plans include continued support of disaster relief teams through this Friday, August 26.
“We never know when an emergency of this nature will take place,” said Chris Striebel, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Assistant Director. “The important thing is to be ready when it does. We are honored to be able to provide physical, emotional and spiritual assistance to those who worked so hard to respond to the destruction caused by the severe weather and the tornado,” Striebel added.
