JOIN US FOR THE 2018 RED SHIELD EVENT

You’re invited to a Backyard Bash to celebrate the work of The Salvation Army in our backyard!  Our keynote speakers are George and Susan Heartwell - a couple who know and love our community and The Salvation Army.

We’re holding the Backyard Bash indoors (we do live in the land of unpredictable weather), but never fear – it will include all the things you love to enjoy in the backyard!  We’ll have yard games, BBQ, live music and of course a casual atmosphere! We’re convinced no one wants another rubber chicken dinner, so we promise the food will not disappoint.

The Red Shield Event is the single most important annual fundraising event for The Salvation Army in Kent County. In addition to all the fun we plan to share inspiring stories of how The Salvation Army is changing lives in our “backyard”. You’ll also be provided an important opportunity to financially support the work of The Salvation Army in our community.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: GEORGE & SUSAN HEARTWELL

George and Susan Heartwell have a long history of impact in our community. Married for 47 years, they have learned to support one another on various paths, honoring their differences and remaining committed to their life partnership.

George served the citizens of Grand Rapids, first as a city commissioner and then as its Mayor, for a combined 20 years.  He is an ordained minister for the United Church of Christ and ministered for 14 years at Heartside Ministry.  He has also served as the Director of the Community Leadership Institute at Aquinas College and as the President and CEO of Pilgrim Manor Retirement Community.

Susan’s history of working with crime victims led to the establishment of the Children’s Assessment Center, an agency responding to allegations of child sexual abuse.  She later served as the Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation, working to link community resources to the needs of the youth of Grand Rapids Public Schools.

MAYFLOWER CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH is a welcoming church family seeking to learn how to love God, neighbor and self, as Jesus commanded. Beginning in Grand Rapids on May 15, 1958 when 63 men and women embarked on a journey to launch a new congregation, Mayflower Congregational Church has grown to 1,000 members and is now celebrating 60 years of ministry.

Mayflower Congregational Church’s strong commitment to outreach has led it to give over $150,000 to organizations in our community and around the world. From Grand Rapids Public School uniforms to a water well in Zimbabwe, a newly surfaced basketball court at St. John’s Home to extending the hours at Baxter Community Center Market, as well as supporting Family Promise’s Partners in Housing Program by purchasing and renovating and furnishing eleven manufactured homes for homeless families over the last four years– they are making a difference near and far! Mayflower currently supports 24 local and international ministries.

The Salvation Army is proud to be a partner of Mayflower Congregational Church. Mayflower has contributed to The Salvation Army financially and with the time and talent of church members for many years. It’s a partnership that began 35 years ago and has become an important part of the work of The Salvation Army. Mayflower Congregation Church is very deserving of the Trinity Award.
