Someplace to Turn

Jun 5, 2025

With a wife and two kids at home and another in the hospital an hour and a half away, Kyle felt like he had no options left. That was when he decided to talk to Doug Kucera, The Salvation Army’s representative for Marshall County. It was a decision that changed everything for Kyle and his family.

When his youngest child got very sick and ended up in the hospital for several months, Kyle had to take a leave of absence from his job, praying he would not get fired because of it. While his family called Plymouth home, the closest hospital that could treat his son was 70 miles away in Fort Wayne. The cost for gas to get there and back throughout the week began to add up and weighed heavily on Kyle’s mind. He was running out of money – and options – so he turned to The Salvation Army.

Thankfully, Doug was there to help.

Over the course of the long hospital stay, Doug was able to provide Kyle with several checks made out to the local gas station. The attendant would use each check to fill up Kyle’s car and then would put any extra funds onto a gas card for use in the future.
Eventually, Kyle stopped coming to The Salvation Army for help.

Today, Doug prays that Kyle’s son is doing better, allowing him to return to work, have peace of mind, and lessen his need for assistance. Even though Doug does not know what situation Kyle and his family are in now, he is thankful that Salvation Army funds were there to help in a time of desperate need.

Every day, circumstances occur that are beyond our control, but thanks to our incredible volunteers and amazing gifts from donors like you, The Salvation Army is ready to respond. Service Extension Units across Indiana exist not to provide a handout, but to give a hand up, to be there in a time of need when there is nowhere else to turn.
