1 million signatures for better migration policies!
by Catherine MALLET
Currently a European Citizen’s Initiative* campaign team is trying to engage a number of large European organisations in a campaign on key issues of migration as a reaction to the refugee crisis which started in 2015. The campaign will target the many EU citizens who are already volunteering, donating or following migration and refugee causes. AT EU level the campaign will advocate for 4 key issues:
- Community sponsorship for resettlement
- Legal channels for workers at all skills levels
- Decriminalisation of service provision
- Accountability at borders
The Salvation Army is a potential partner in this campaign given its large outreach to citizens who are concerned for the human rights of refugees and migrants. At EU level the EU Affairs Office hopes to support some of the campaign’s key messages and promote the signing of the signatures across our networks. The campaign will be launched later in the year; we will give further updates through this newsletter.
*A European citizens' initiative is an invitation to the European Commission to propose legislation on matters where the EU has competence to legislate. A citizens' initiative has to be backed by at least one million EU citizens, coming from at least 7 out of the 28 member states. A minimum number of signatories is required in each of those 7 member states.
