Speaker 1
- It is important to empower women because they often remain invisible with no recognition or appreciation of their work.
- Women and girls are hidden treasure and must be recognized as they are the backbone of society
- The way to empower them is through education and health care access
Speaker 2
- Women are affected by malnutrition more than men
- There is less information available to rural women
- Rural areas have high rates of early pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease
- Women are misinformed about contraception
- One in six girls die during unsafe abortions. This could be halved by making contraceptives available
- With lack of education and poor access to healthcare they are double victims of gender violence

- 42% of women in rural areas have lower levels of education
- Women with disability have less access to health care
What was of particular significance to share with The Salvation Army globally?
- We need to improve women’s access to education and health care. This will contribute to ending poverty and eliminating hunger
- We need to teach men to understand that change is needed in the way women are treated
